The missing component with most fitness education systems is, they exclusively focus on how to train well and they’re very science-vocabulary heavy, but that’s about it. The downfall in most coaches doesn’t lie in their ability to name exercises and create programming, but rather in their ability to onboard and retain clients, which at the end of the day is the root of this industry.
The OPEX CCP Course is not just another run-of-the-mill, churn-and-burn certification. Their focus is not just handing you a piece of paper after taking a weekend course and sending you along your way. They want to give you a turnkey solution to starting your own fitness business—and maintaining it for the long run.
Founded by James Fitzgerald, the first winner of the original CrossFit Games, OPEX Fitness has become an airtight system that has become known as Mixed Modal. James understood that CrossFit is a game of being good at a lot of different skills and being able to string those skills together in a metabolically competitive environment. In order to succeed in this type of workout, you have to be a Jack of all trades rather than an elite specialist. But don’t be fooled; CrossFitters can hold their own in other barbell sports as well. And whether or not you like or support CrossFit, it has done amazing things for the fitness industry as a whole.
Going into the OPEX CCP course, I was never a CrossFit person. While I participated in almost all the activities you would do at a CrossFit gym, I never liked the way it was all strung together in a work-capacity-driven system. Coming from a powerlifting and Olympic weightlifting background, I was overly attached to a particular method. In fact, early on in my career, I was a very anti-CrossFit person. I hated the random RX of weights, heights of boxes, reps, and then throwing them all into a group setting with a rushed time factor. It seemed like a recipe for injury and disaster, but as I got older I was able to see there was an intelligent way to go about this style of training. And now that I have been to the OPEX CCP course, I can see that there is a methodical and systematic approach to improving your fitness while training to handle these demands.
OPEX CCP opened my eyes in many ways. The best part is the business education that you receive from Jim Crowell, CEO of OPEX and former leader of a successful hedge fund in New York, not to mention CrossFit games competitor.
If you’re a brand new coach, especially a coach looking for a community or a struggling coach looking for help with your business, the OPEX CCP is worth your investment. Here’s some more information about the course.
What Is OPEX?
OPEX is a coaching education system and licensing system whose purpose is to help people improve their lives through customized, individualized fitness training. The goal of OPEX is to help coaches be better coaches by giving them the necessary tools to help humans be healthier. OPEX is focused entirely around individual, custom design, understanding that while there are rules to training, each person needs something different.
Originally, James’ business was called Optimum Performance Training (OPT) but when he moved from Calgary, Alberta to Scottsdale, Arizona he had to change the name due to an existing trademark of OPT. Because the service offered by OPT promises to help you achieve your apex (definition: top or highest part of something) in training and results, the team decided to swap the A for an O and change the name to OPEX.
“Fitness is the medium for so many people to connect to their highest values.”
What Is the CCP Course?
The CCP Course is comprised of two components.
The online version is digitally delivered on an awesome platform with a great learning experience that features a specific amount of hours to complete. You’ll go over the following:
- Business Coaching
- Program Design
Then there’s the immersion component, which is three days of in-person, hands-on learning with James, Jim, and the OPEX team, as well as 54 other OPEX coaches from around the world.
Finally, you wrap it all up in a final project to earn your CCP credentials.
While I know it sounds intimidating and maybe a longer process than you expected because there’s so much prep work, don’t fear. They have ample resources to help you along the way and this education will help you start out on the right foot, rather than be stuck in the constant burnout that most trainers experience. Too many trainers give up on their career because it ends up feeling impossible to sustain their business and they don’t know how to give their clients what they need. Stick with this course, even when it feels demanding, and you’ll see the reward in the long run.
What Are the Best Parts of the Course?
I absolutely love that, while OPEX is known for being a programming system, the first thing they teach before you even hear an anatomical term is how to do business. Honestly, the CCP course is like going to business school for a fitness business. Sounds pretty good, right? Trust me, this is something you don’t want to miss out on.
While they don’t actually build the business for you (there are services out there that do that, and we don’t recommend giving away that much agency in your own business), they lay out step-by-step what you need to do as a coach to set yourself up for a successful business. Even more so, the business education isn’t just throwing tasks and jargon at you; it also has a progressive systemic approach that helps you take your why and install it into a business.
One of the biggest mistakes I see most coaches make is, they do not take the time to plan their client experience, who they are trying to reach, and what message they are trying to send. While these may seem like things you can do once you get going, they are the things you should think about from the very beginning—and starting your business using the OPEX course addresses these issues immediately.
From identifying your target market to understanding the buying cycle to the consultation, assessment, nutrition, program design, and implementation, this course walks you through everything you need to know.
They are able to do this because, prior to coming to the in-person immersion course, you have to go through an extensive online course that features 58 modules of education you need to become one of the best coaches on the planet and build a sustainable training business. So when you show up to the in-person class, you already have a lot of tools under your belt.
Why Should You Take the Course?
In this industry, we lose too many good coaches because they are not given the necessary tools to be successful in this industry and were taught to prioritize the wrong things. We’re taught we need to put all of our eggs into the social media basket, so to speak, and perform all these fancy movements and have all the letters behind our name. Instead we need a set of tools and the ability to go gather experience and perspective. This is much more important and useful than wasting time editing videos for Instagram.
Take it from someone who has taken nearly 30 different courses, workshops, conferences, summits, mastermind events, etc. from various systems and educators in the last four years. It is not my goal to swing you into one system and demonize you for choosing anything else; it is my goal to help guide your perspective and showcase the best educational resources that hopefully resonate with you, giving you the tools you need from the very beginning.
Previously in my career, I was solely focused on one particular style of fitness (powerlifting) and had a scarcity mindset that it was the only solution people needed. With immense gratitude I can say today that I have learned from the best in so many different settings—and now I have so many more useful tools to help others with.
This course is one of the best courses you can take if you are just starting out or looking to build a framework around your business, which will help you to scale it to a level that allows you to live the life you dream but also deliver quality service. It’s a business in a box, so if you are someone who loves fitness, wants to help people, and enjoys learning about human performance—and you have no clue where to start—this is the course for you.
